Founded in 2006 and marking its second year in the Horse Capital of the World, GPL is the world’s only LGBTQ polo league, with a network of players from 15 countries.
Six polo teams of four players will take to the field, with every thrilling goal and galloping stride a testament to the team of remarkable athletes - both human and equine. While the action takes place on the field, spectators will be treated to the whimsical and witty comedy of Lexington’s own Helena Handbasket (pronounced HELL n uh Handbasket), who will also emcee the event. People who know her lovingly call Helena “Mamaw” but most people know her as the one and only comedy queen with the voice of a choir boy past his adolescence. She is sure to bring fun with a saucy twist that you won't want to miss.
GPL’s illustrious tailgate installations are a showcase of fabulous and inventive creations, where ordinary tents are transformed into a creative masterpiece. Tailgate sponsors are encouraged to bring their most imaginative ideas, eye-catching designs, and picnic-perfect food and beverages to compete for the coveted VisitLEX “Best in Show” Tailgate award.
Another highlight of the day is the “Parade of Flags” where the Kentucky Horse Park Mounted Patrol will Present the Colors.
On Wednesday, September 3rd, mix and mingle with the players at the VIP Reception at the Apiary, 218 Jefferson Street, Lexington. This fun-filled evening includes the presentation of the teams and features an open bar of luscious libations, delicious hors d’oeuvres and entertainment. Dress Code is WHITE with a splash of Orange or Blue – GPL’s signature colors. Tickets HERE
“When I first founded GPL in Los Angeles, the goal was to gather a group of friends who shared an interest in polo,” said Chip McKenney, President of GPL. “Historically, and even today, there has been an absence of ‘out & visible’ gay athletes in professional sports. As we raise awareness and visibility of LGBTQ+ athletes, that visibility sparks discussion; discussion leads to understanding; understanding is the cornerstone of acceptance; and acceptance is the key to inclusion. GPL is changing perceptions in the LGBTQ+ community, athletics and society at large, one chukker at a time.”
As a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization, GPL has raised more than $400,000 for LGBTQ+ organizations at its flagship tournament in Palm Beach County, Florida. It has produced tournaments in the United Kingdom, St. Tropez, Chantilly, France, Menlo, California and Palm Beach, FL. In addition, they travel to Argentina every December for the Argentine Open and a week of polo in Lobos.
